While looking for any evidence of a link between chrysanthemum tea and fibroids for my last post, I stumbled upon this excellent discussion of how Chinese medicine views fibroids. Scroll down to the "etiology" portion to see a description of the three causes of fibroids in the Chinese view -- mental depression, improper diet, and pathogenic factors. I've had all of these at some time or another during the past five years! Also excellent discussion of the various herbs used to treat fibroids.

Hi again,
I meant to add that I went for a consultation this past week with a Chinese acupuncturist team and they said they wouldn't really be able to help much with the fibroids. They said they have worked with other women in the past and after three months, there was no change in the size of the fibroid. But they did tell me I had low energy and slow blood energy. I have decided to start anyway as it couldn't do any harm. I'll keep you posted!
Good for you to try acupuncturists but disappointing what they told you. I'm planning to write a detailed post about how to choose an acupuncturist, but in the meantime will say the following:
1. How big is your fibroid? If it's really big, e.g. more than 10 cm is the figure I have heard, then even the Chinese approaches will not be able to shrink it.
2. I would suggest to check around with other acupuncturists and see if you can find one that has more experience with fibroids. The best bet is to search for acupuncturists who specialize in helping women with infertility. Because those acupuncturists are the ones who understand the best about how the female system works, and getting rid of fibroids is something many women need to do in order to become pregnant. Fortunately, this is a popular specialty now and you can google search "acupuncture" "infertility" and the name of your city and should find something.
3. The acupuncture and herbs will work best if you combine them with changing your diet, doing more exercise, and doing meditation/stress reduction/emotional work -- they all work in synergy.
Good luck!
I just found out in Chinese medicine that I am the element Wood. Do you know what you are? I wonder if more wood women get fibroids and that if we strengthened our liver and wood constitution if we might not grow fibroids? You have such thorough research (one of your links to a study I just read in a new book), thanks!
Good question, I have never actually asked it that way which element I am. I should do that! I definitely have always been told I have liver issues since I started acupuncture, and indeed the liver seems to be very important in helping prevent/heal fibroids. So I think your theory makes a lot of sense.
