I’ve been taking 3 tablespoons a day for the last few weeks.
This week I had my period for the first time since starting my fibroid-shrinking regiment, and my blood loss is a lot less than usual. I almost can’t believe it, it’s so different. I wasn’t expecting my new regimen to have an impact so soon. Is it the molasses working?
And why would molasses work anyway? It’s hard to understand from what’s on the web exactly why it’s supposed to work, from what I can tell it may be because of the iron and the other trace minerals that it is rich in, also it evidently helps alkalize your body which acts against the fibroids. (I plan to write about alkalinization later in another post).
The molasses is cheap and easy and tasty (I mix with hot water and have it instead of dessert with each meal). You need to get specifically unsulphured blackstrap molasses, and like everything else it's best that it be organic.
Here are a couple of links talking about using blackstrap molasses to help fibroids. http://www.earthclinic.com/CURES/fibroids.html

If there is a good health food store or Whole Foods near you, then you can get it there. In case there's not, you can order it from Amazon.com, here's a link:Wholesome Sweeteners Fair Trade Organic Molasses, 32-Ounce Bottles (Pack of 6)

Hey there, I have been reading your blog and enjoying it thoroughly. I also have fibroids and after reading about the benefits of blackstrap molasses, I decided to experiment.
After over two weeks of taking it nearly every day, I can report that my period this month is about 50% less painful than last. I am also taking Vitex Combo, it is a herbal formula and I'm wondering if you've tried it. Ingredients include Chaste Tree, Black Cohosh and Wild Yam. I also joined the gym over a month ago and am generally feeling a lot better healthwise.
I am nearly 37 and trying to get pregnant. I had a miscarriage in December and now I am really taking a focused look at the fibroids issue. I am abut 20 pounds overweight at the moment which is a big factor.
I will continue with you on your journey. Best of luck with your ultrasound in April.
Thanks so much for your comment, and I'm so glad that you are enjoying the blog! This is a lonely journey so really appreciate the words of support!
That's great to hear that your period is so much better this month. Indeed there seems to be something to the blackstrap molasses (I have grown to love the taste too...). The Vitex Combo has things in it that I have often seen recommended as good western herbs for fibroids. I took vitex for about a year and it didn't help me unfortunately, so now I am doing primarily Chinese style herbs. But what works for each person is different it seems.
I'm also trying to lose weight, aobut 15 lbs to go to what I consider my ideal weight. I'm also feeling a lot better now that I am working out more.
Good luck and please keep me posted how you are doing!
I have been taking BlackStrap Molasses (BSM) since I was diagnosed with fibroids in Feb. of 2008. I has really worked!!! It has even regulated my periods (I was having a period twice a month, heavy bleeding, extreme cramping, fatigue, etc.). Women, if you are having menstrual issues or fibroid issues take BSM, the results are amazing!!! I breeze through my period every month now. It's barely a blip on my radar!!! I've also read that it even helps some women with menopause issues (I'll keep tabs on that since I'm almost 49 and about to enter that phase of my life).
So glad to hear that the BSM has been successful for you! I have to admit I've been taking a break with it, I just maxed out. But I should get back to it!
After reading this blog, have just gone out brought some organic molasses and have my first taste. It has quite a good taste but is very sweet. I probably take this every morning but don't think I could do this 3 times a day. Its just too sweet for me!
I already take Vitex and do acupuncture and this has done wonders to slow down my period. My period is 7 days but only heavy for 8 hours. There is less clots and but more of a blood flow which I am happy about but would like to slow the flow a bit.
Will keep you updated.
Hi Anonymous,
Yes the molasses is pretty sweet. I tend to take mine mixed with the Chinese herbs so the bitter and the sweet balance out. If it seems too sweet, maybe less at a time in more doses? I find it's pretty good with Celestial Seasonings Vanilla Hazelnut tea.
So glad to hear that the Vitex and acupuncture have been helping you. If the blackstrap molasses doesn't help enough with slowing the flow, I just heard about something called Solaray Menstrual Blend which some of the women on the fibroid listserv I'm on say has helped them (I have not tried it though).
Good luck and keep us posted!
Another bsm experimenter. At the moment I am in the throws of a horrible period. My mother had fibroids (and a full hysterectomy)and I assume I have them too. I'm 48 and the periods have progressively become worse each month. Two months ago I had hemoglobin of 6. I took iron for the past month and a half and saw a huge difference in my energy and stamina while changing nothing else. I will continue to take half the iron until my periods taper off but I will also try bsm. I love the stuff and ate it on cornbread and pancakes as a child. I tried it by the spoonful and can manage a teaspoon that way, but it's much better on buttered toast. So 3 T a day and we'll see what happens. Wish me luck girls.
Good luck with the BSM, I hope it helps you!
How will I know that the molasses is working?
The thing most people seem to report as a result of the BSM is their menstrual blood flow gets ligher.
There are claims on the web that BSM can help shrink fibroids, personally I don't think BSM alone is enough to do that however it can be a good part of a fibroid-shrinking activity plan.
Thanks for your blog, very interesting. Where did you receive advice on the dosage of BSM? (ie 3 tablespoons). I'm a little worried about weight gain - I seem to remember taking it some years ago and putting on weight. Thanks again, J
To be honest I'm not sure where exactly I found it, it must have been mentioned on one of the web pages I looked at. That amount also went well with my 3x per day herb regimen, as I took them together.
It is indeed very sweet so be careful not to overdo it! good luck!
Hello, thanks for creating this blog. So how did BSM worked out for you. Now it has been almost 8 months? Any difference? Thanks, V
Hi there, thanks for the comment. I found that the BSM helped me a lot when I first started taking it. However after time didn't see further progress, and according to the BioSet practioner I work with after awhile my body had had enough of it. (I am finding as I use various natural substances that my body likes me to change it up periodically) Also I discovered I have a Candida issue so it's better for me to avoid sugar. However, I still recommend BSM for those who have not tried it yet, as I did indeed find it to be helpful and other readers of this blog have too as you can see above.
I have never posted anything online until today. My husband and I have been trying to get pregnant for 2 years. I was booked in for a myomectomy for Wednesday (the day after tomorrow)and had to cancel it because I just found out that I'm pregnant!!!! I've been taking bsm for 2 months due to heavy periods and a 4cm fibroid. I can't attribute this to anything else! I encourage women to try bsm - it's harmless and for me, it worked!
Wow, that's amazing! Thanks for sharing your story!
Best wishes for a wonderful pregnancy!
I was diagnosed with Several uterine fibroids rancing from 1 centimeter to 4 centimeters.. and an enlarged uterus.. I started taking 2 tablespoons of Black Strap Unsulphured Molasses and 2 tablespoons of apple cider vinegar.. and went back for my ultrasound 3 months later and my doctor was shocked all fibroids were gone and uterus shrunk down to normal size I was having extremly heavy periods and blood clots its all gone.. and Im into the last stages of menopause noe with more energy and no more moodiness I still take 1 teaspoon a day of each as it regulates my hormones!
Thanks for sharing! Another great story!
Hi, thanks for the info.
I don't have heavy period but I do have a very very big fibroid and from all that I read here I didn't really understand if the BSM shrinked the fibroids or just reduced the period?
I'm also scheduled to have a surgey next month but of course I would be very happy not to do it.
Thanks aagin.

Hi Anonymous

That's so interesting what your BioSet practitioner said about your body having "enough" of the BSM....I have been experimenting with unsulphered blackstrap molasses to control crazy heavy periods, and I've noticed that I seem to do best if I cycle on and off...a dose of BSM mixed in water once a day for a couple of months, then off for a couple of months. It really does work miracles for horrible periods, but after taking it daily for a few months I started feeling particularly heavy and bloated, almost like everything wasn't purging like it should. If I cut back then started back up again, that alleviated the problem.
I really wonder what it is in particular that helps, I know it's rich in iron, calcium and magnesium so maybe any combination of those.
Interesting what you've found about cycling on and off. I seem to find that with a lot of things, but the BDM in particular I can only take it for so long.
Yes and I wonder what it is in it that makes it work! Nobody seems to really know.
I am sailing in the same boat. Heavy flow (2 to 3 days), clots total days 12 to 14 and 26 day cycle. totally fed up. taking Hoemopathy medicine at the moment but too soon to see the effects. I would like to try these. Will get the bottle this weekend and post in a month how it went.
Thank you for these posts.
Good luck, I hope it's helpful for you! Please keep us all posted.
This is in response to my post Sept 23. My periods of the month of Oct are over. I took BSM for about 4-5 days during my period, 1 spoon a day and took couple spoons during my first 2 days, again 1 spoon a day. This month was the most weirdest month in 1 year. My periods start with spotting, and it did this time as well. Usually my flow starts 3 or maximum 4th day. This time spotting continued up to 7th day!!! I was like..what's going on??? Flow started 7th day evening, heavy, but not as heavy as in the past, less clots. The flow continued for 3 days, again, not heavy, and very less clots!!! the periods ended at day 15th (including 7 days of spotting). So, did BSM worked??? It sure did, something did (I am 4 months into homeopathy medicine)!! This time less blood flow, less clots, but really painful periods :(. I would like to see how my 2nd month with BSM goes.. . I certainly will post again in one month. I do have some weird pain going inside me this month, the pain is still there, like cramps, in my thigh, shooting pain from top of the thigh to my knees. Sometimes right thigh, sometimes left. The shooting pain is also sometimes felt in the middle lower back. Anyone experiencing this as well?
Thanks so much for sharing.
No, no shooting pain like that here...have you been looked at by a chiropractor?
hmm..why a chiropractor? I do not excercise (sadly, but i dont) neither i carry any weight or play sports..this is something else, i believe. Should i see a chiropractor?
Just thinking the shooting pain in your leg might be due to a pinched nerve or something like that
Reponding to the anon post of Oct 19th, I experience a similar shooting pain from my left hip to the knew. I don't think it's unusual to experience ithis pain. I have endometriosis and believe this to be related to the pelvis pain that accompanies the condition. Hope this is helpful to you. :)
Wow! This is really interesting. Thank you for this post!
I have been taking BSM for iron, but I wondered how it might help hormonal/fertility issues. I am glad to hear that so many have had positive results!
Thanks so much for all of this information. I am faced with possible surgery for a fibroid which causes heavy bleeding that has led to anemia. The doctor has finally indicated that my iron levels are so low that there is no other option. I have gone out to purchase a bottle of BSM today and will try this to see if it will work to both alleviate the heavy periods and help with the iron levels.
So sorry to hear about the anemia. I hope this helps. Also have you tried acupuncture and Chinese herbs? Might be worth giving try before you resort to surgery.
Best wishes to you
OK, i stumbled across this blog since I had been diagnosed with fibroids years ago, but had no symptoms, until recently. As I am entering menopause, the fibroids grew and began to give me problems. Heavy bleeding, pain, etc. Had doctor's workup, checked for cancer, etc. Had an ovarian cyst removed, a uterine polyp removed and two fibroids "shaved down" through a surgical procedure. Things were goood for about a year and a 1/2. Then the fibroids came back and started with the pain again and heavy mentrual bleeding. Bleeding for about 15 days. Doctor offered hormones, hysteretomy, but I am scared of major surgery that could cause other health issues. I am 48 and will soon be in menopause and the fibroids will shrink so I am told. So I tried the blackstrap molasses thing and WOW, within 3 days the bleeding slowed down to nothing!!!!! AMAZING!!! Not sure what is in this stuff. But it worked for me! I am relieved and feel more energetic and the pain is gone too! Thanks for the posts on BLACKSTRAP molasses. Also, drink plenty of water and take a good multivitamin and exercise and eat less processed foods and you will notice a differnece in your fibroids! But I really think the molasses did the trick so quickly!
Wow that is so great that you got results so quickly, thanks for sharing your experience!
Hi I'm 46. I have always had clots, but and I've only recently been told I have fibroids. Like you, I would like to shrink the fibroids and increase fertility (yeah I know I'm crazy but it would be #1 sniff sniff).
Do you know if the BSM would cause any lining issues? I'm just concerned that if it lessens the flow, it may be because it thins the uterine lining. I'm also battling my weight, so I'll have to watch the BSM calories.
You are correct when you say it's a lonely journey. I wish you the best of luck on yours.
Hi Anonymous
Hmm that's a good question but I really don't know about the impact on the lining. To be honest, not sure exactly how the BSM works, and have not been able to find any good explanation.
Wishing you the best in your journey. A comment from me on trying at this age, make sure your partner's sperm are really great.
Thank you for your posts. I started the BSM last month right after my period ended (I had just found the post). My cycle for the last couple of years had started coming every 26 days. Most recently my 2nd and 3rd days were extremely heavy and I could go as many as 7 to 8 days. After the one month of BSM my cycle got very light at the end of the second day. I had coffee and then I had some cramping and a heavy gush that left a little heavy bleeding for about an hour. Then on day four it seemed to be completely over and then I had coffee again and another gush and heaviness for a about an hour. But I was completely done in five days. It's been a while since I've been done in 5 days. I will try to lay off the coffee altogether on my next cycle to see what results I get. My stomach has also felt less bloated.
Thank you for your posts. I have had trouble with fibroids for years. Had them shaved and had two children. Now they had come back with very heavy cycles with anemia. My day 2-3 were very heavy, and it lasted about 7 days with a 26-day cycle. I started BSM after the day after my cycle ended and (2 tbsp a day). My cycle was five days and much much lighter excepte when I had coffee. It seemed to cause cramping and gushers that lasted maybe a half hour. But there was definitely a difference. Next time I will try to do without coffee and see what happens. Not sure why coffee has this effect on me. It always prolonged my cycle even before BSM.
No more fibs -- that's great! Thanks for sharing!
Hey Anonomous I have had Fibroids since 2000 and they wanted me to do a hystorectomy, I said no. I used to get my period and it would come and go in 2-3 days with just a little spotting. NO CRAMPS. Now I have had increased periods with clots. and legs are very weak and Pain in the pelvic area. It has been constant until this last last Dec 2010 I started having a pain in my lower back and in the crease of my body and thigh in the front. The pain now radiates down the back of my left leg at first it came and went but now its here all day everyday. In 2000 my Doc said my fibroid is like being six months pregnant he said that it will get worse if Something isn't done. To hear you are having simular pain makes me happy.. I know its them darn fibroids again. I recently found out when my grandmother died she was carrying a fibroid the size of a basketball. Im sure she died with low iron issues. If anyone has any suggestions please email me at teresaglaze1@hotmail.com.....I need a natural cure....I also have thyroid issues. curious does anyone else
Thanks "Arkgirlsick&tiredoffibroids" for sharing. So sorry to hear about your pain.
Many women with fibroids also have thyroid issues, and indeed many alternative medicine people believe that the two go together.
There's lots of information in this blog, hopefully some of it will be helpful for you. Try looking through categories of interest. Also this post could be a good way to start: http://shrinkingfibroids.blogspot.com/2011/06/top-ten-must-do-natural-remedies-for.html
Please keep us posted how it goes
I'm not sure why BSM works, but it does. Also, I don't know how much it shrinks fibroids, but it's a wonder cure for regulating your cycle.
I have a few small fibroids and started experiencing problems with heavy bleeding, clots and periods that would go for 5 or 6 days, stop for a couple and then start up again.
I read about BSM on a natural cure website and thought I would give it a try. I was on day 13 of my period. Bought a bottle of BSM and took a tablespoon at around 3pm. By 6pm, a mere 3 hours later, my period stopped!! Continued to take 2 tablespoons per day regularly. No more clots. No more unusually heavy periods. Cycles are regular, and get this, no menstrual cramps before or during my cycle.
Like I said at the beginning, I don't know why this stuff works, but trust me, I've been using it for almost a year, and I'm ready to film a commercial about the benefits!
Hi BDM Believer,
Thanks for sharing! Indeed it really does seem to work for regulating one's cycle, glad it was so helpful for you. I too wonder exactly why (but of course nobody will do formal research on it, because there is no money to be made)
I am so tired of my fibroids and anemia that I am ready to see a gynie to have a hysterectomy. Then I thought what have I got to lose by trying the BSM. Love the taste with almond milk. I have been taking 1 tbsp a day for about two weeks now and this month my period was lighter by 50 per cent. Still had pains from my cyst but hope this will pass. Definite improvement. Will see what next month brings. Awesome natural remedy. Thanks so much.
Wow, that's great, so glad to hear it!!
Today is my first day to try the BSM.Other than water, what's a good way to mix it. I'm committed and convinced that there has to be a natural cure for my fibroids....
I personally put it in hot water and drink it like a tea. I know some people put it on top of food -- you could put on oatmeal or other hot cereal, or on top of sweet potatoes.
Good luck with your fibroid shrinking and let us know how it goes!
Hi, this blog is very encouraging. I just started taking a mixture with beet juice, black molasses, lemon juice, and aloe vera juice. I hope it works. My cycle is with five days. Taking it twice a day. Dr says the contours ate draining my iron. Hoping for gray success.
Helo Everything Feminine! Wishing you the best, let us know how it goes!
I started BSM today for extremely heavy periods. I think I'm going to stick to 1 Tablespoon per day to begin with. I have been having very heavy periods with clotting and pain for a long time now. I know that I have at least one fibroid (found years ago). About 10 days ago I started taking a liquid iron supplement like Floradix. This period was still heavy, clotty, and painful~but the bleeding was definitely not as bad. It's my theory that the iron is what must help. For some reason, it seems like if you're low in iron you bleed more~which obviously just makes things worse. So if we take iron that our bodies can actually assimilate, it helps? Just my thoughts. I'll be back next month to let you know if the BSM changes anything for me! Thanks for the blog :)
Yes it does seem that if you're low in iron you bleed more -- a pretty cruel irony!
I'm not sure if it's the iron in the blackstrap molasses, the various trace minerals, or the fact that it's alkaline, or all of the above.
Here's a link that talks about the various minerals that it contains:http://www.naturalnews.com/026296_molasses_health_sugar.html
Wishing you the best and let us know how it goes!
I am trying it in tea-- currently using Celestial Seasonings BENGAL SPICE tea. the tea is decaffinated, and already so flavorful and the strong taste of the blackstrap molasses does not overpower it. I will let you know how it goes!
That's a great idea, as the Bengal Spice tea has a lot of cinnamon which is good for fibroids! Good luck and keep us posted.
Actually, I do have an update! I have been using taking blackstrap molasses five to six times a week in tea, and I feel great! This month, I didn't need ANY drugs to get through my period, and I haven't had it this nicely in YEARS! Your blog has been a real help and inspiration!
Hi Kacy,
Wow, so excited to hear that! Great!
Hello - curious to know how your battle with fibroids is going? You're first blog was 2008...have things improved for you, and if so, what are you using now?
I too suffer from a large fibroid, and have just started with acv and bsm this week.
Hello Lu,
Thanks for asking. Since I've been working on fertility at the same time I've also taken some fertility drugs which unfortunately have counterbalanced my shrinking efforts, so still got those fibroids. Continuing to work on it!
Thank you so much for this blog! I had a myomectomy about 6 years ago and learned to years later that i had another fibroid along with an ovarian cyst(that refuses to go away), plus recently being diagnosed with border-line anemia. I started with 1 Tbsp of blackstrap molasses once a day - a week before my period started. I noticed that my pain was greatly reduced, as well as clots, and overall my period was lighter. My only concern is that I continued to spot for a week after my period should have been over. I'm definitely going to continue using the bsm... maybe with some acv... anything to avoid surgery again. Thank you and good luck!
thanks Anonymous. Wishing you the best and let us know how it goes -- it may take a little more time for the effects to add up. And do explore elsewhere in this blog for other ideas!
I just found out I have multiple fibroids. I catch hell every month with my cycle. My cycle started today and I started taking BSM today as well. I'm praying that it works for me. My doctor is talking hysterectomy and I'm not trying to hear that. I am 32 with no children, I want children and I am willing to try anything to make that happen... I will keep you posted... Thanks for the tip!!!
Hi Misery!!!
Hoping the BSM will help you. It may need more than one cycle. Please do look at this blog for some other ideas too. And DO NOT let any doctor rush you into hysterectomy, especially at your age! It's the worst, friend had one for her fibroids, and she has not been the same since.
Please keep us posted how you are doing.
Anon.
I had heavy periods and have been diagnosed with fibroids and have had heavy bleeding and clots for 3 months. after reading about bsm(treacle) on websites i started taking it. after 1 table spoon my bleeding lessened but was still quite heavy, so i started taking 3 tablespoons a day, its been 4 days and the difference is amazing. bleeding is very light. i just had a coffee and bleeding started again, but after reading this blog i realise it must have been the coffee. i would recommend treacle or bsm to every woman with heavy bleeding. i feel quite bloated and still have pain but the bleeding has decreased so much! its fantastic!
Hi Anon, thanks for sharing, so glad to hear about your good results!
Has taking BSM every delayed a period from starting??? I have had fibroids for abt 10 years. I am now 44. Started taking BSM about 2 weeks ago. My last 2 periods came 4 days early and the flow was heavy for abt 3 days, with a day of spotting before and after. My period was due to start yesterday (which would have been 28 days from the first day of my last period) I have been typically pretty regular in my cycles for several years. Just have heavy bleeding and severe cramping. Any insight would be great.
Hi Anonymous
Sounds like just the molasses may not be enough. Check out this post about the top ten things you should be doing for fibroids: http://shrinkingfibroids.blogspot.com/2011/06/top-ten-must-do-natural-remedies-for.html Need to mount a full-force attack. Good luck and let us know about your progress!
