caviar for egg quality? cod liver oil for fibroids?

I went to a fascinating lecture the other day by Sally Fallon, author of Nourishing Traditions and keeper of flame for the Weston Price nutritional approach.

The topic was eating for pre-conception, and for babies and small children.  Weston Price was a dentist about a hundred years ago who studied indigenous peoples.  He observed that when people such as Eskimos, Seminoles in Florida, the Native Americans in the Pacific Northwest, South Pacific Islanders, and Swiss living in an isolated mountain village ate their traditional diets, they had straight and healthy teeth.  However when they switched to a more "modern" diet, people began to have more cavities, children had crooked teeth, and even the shapes of peoples faces changed, becoming more elongated and less attractive.  Based on this, he researched what it was in the traditional diets that was nutritionally helpful, and what was harmful.

The key thing he zeroed in on was the role of the proper fats.  He also noticed that each of the traditional diets had a special "sacred food" that people would eat before conceiving, and also would feed to children.  These included things like liver and other organ meats, fish eggs, seafood, butter, raw whole milk, cheeses made from raw milk, and cod liver oil.

Her conclusion was  that couples trying to conceive should follow a diet that includes many of these nutrient dense foods -- what she called the caviar and pate diet.

My husband loved this of course, and went out to order a bunch of caviar immediately!  There are some good deals on caviar on Amazon, such as this and this.  Fortunately I had some caviar spoons I had received as a gift, and hubby got some caviar serving dishes (you can't serve caviar in metal). Of course the caviar is yummy straight, but I just ordered two books with caviar recipes to give us some variety -- this one and this one.

I also went up to Sally and asked her about her recommendations for fibroids.  She suggested 3 tablespoons of cod liver oil per day, which she says will balance hormones.  She recommends the fermented variety available from Green Pastures.  I have some one order.

I think it's mainly capsules vs. liquid, and various flavors. I got a liquid, still on order and forgot the flavor I chose...

did the person who discussed fermented cod liver say how long to take it to balance your hormones?

That's a really good question but I didn't ask her that. I guess it would depend how out of whack the hormones were to begin with!

How much caviar should one eat for fertility?

Drea, good question on the caviar. There isn't any specific prescription, the caviar is just one of several of what the Weston Price people call "sacred foods" for fertility. Here's some more info: http://nourishedkitchen.com/foods-for-fertility/
Generally I would say, as much as you can afford and/or stand!:)
