I'm trying a new Ayurvedic detox technique, oil pulling. Let's see how it works!
Background here.
How-to here.
I'm experimenting with different oils, including Uncle Harry's Oral Swish, sesame oil and coconut oil.
And here's some additional info, with important point of drinking water afterwards.

I was just reading about this the other day and saying I wanted to try it and then promptly forgot about it. Now I've been reminded again...clearly the universe wants me to do this! ha!
Must be! Let us know how it goes. Today was Day 1 for me...
Here is some more detail on the oil pulling: http://www.iamlondondiva.com/2008/10/oil-pulling-simple-detox-and-most.html
Hello Fibroid Shrinker.
I'm thinking other folks on here may find it helpful if I list everything I take as it is working for me in terms of reducing my fibroid.
I may take supplements that other people have not yet tried. The best supplement, in my opinion, that you can take is high dosage Serrapeptase (I take 11 capsules in the morning and 9 at night) always on an empty stomach.
i will and let us know how it goes for you too. i'm hoping i can stand the taste....don't know that I can commit 20 mins a day to it though...I hope you don't have to do 20 mins to make a real difference. thanks for the additional link.
Hi Manchester Lady
Thanks so much for commenting. Yes please do share what you have been doing, and details on the results you have seen. Wow, 20 capsules a day, that's a lot! How long have you been doing that?
Pleased to hear you would like me to share what I have been doing and I will continue to post on here if people would like to ask me any further questions.
I apologise in advance if I have written too much but I think some background information may be useful here too.
In July 2011 I was diagnosed with one fibroid (8.4cm x 7.9cm x 7.3cm). The reason it was diagnosed was due to investigating why I was having such heavy periods. In the meantime I have been prescribed Tranexamic Acid tablets to help with the heavy blood flow. These tablets work but to me all they did was stop the heavy periods and I wanted to get to the cause of my fibroids. Hence for over a year now I have not stopped in my research for a natural way to reduce the size of my fibroid. At this stage I should add I no longer need to take the Tranexamic acid my periods are far more manageable nowadays. In my opinion fibroids are caused from oestrogen dominance so the view I took was reduce the amount of ‘bad’ oestrogen in my body but also do something to dissolve the fibroid. In the UK the animals we eat hear cannot be injected with growth hormones (I think this may still be allowed in the US?) so whilst I still eat some non-organic meat I do try to buy organic meat when I can. I no longer drink dairy milk either, instead I drink rice milk.
I think I should add I am living in Manchester, England so tablets I am prescribed here I hope are available in the US. However as I come on to the supplements I take nearly everything I take comes from the US and I order them online and they are shipped over to me.
It has been trial and error over the last year in terms of what works and does not work for me, however I will get to the point and will list what works for me but also what I have consciously chosen not to take (and the reason why). Anything I don’t list I do not have an opinion on:
I take:
In the morning:
Serrapeptase (80,000 IU): 11 capsules (SerraEnzyme from Good Health Naturally)
Myomin Plus (500mg): 3 capsules (Chi’s Enterprise, California)
Milk thistle (175mg): 1 capsule (Holland and Barrett) (this supports a healthy liver and therefore supports detoxification)
Maca Root (705mg): 1 capsule (Dr Wong’s essentials – Andeanessence Maca)
EGCg: green tea extract (400mg) (Now Foods)
Lunchtime:
Myomin Plus (2 capsules)
Maca Root (1 capsule)
Milk thistle (1 capsule)
Evening (after dinner):
Calcium D-glucarate (200mg) (Life Extension company) – this supports detoxification
Maca root (1 capsule)
Milk thistle (1 capsule)
ECGC: green tea extract (1 capsule)
Before bed:
Serrapeptase (80,000 IU): 9 capsules (SerraEnyzyme from Good Health Naturally)
Myomin Plus (500mg): 3 capsules (Chi’s Enterprise, California)
I have recently also started taking Nascent Iodine as I had read that is supposed to help too but this has been for only a few weeks.
I DO NOT take the following:
Dr Wong’s Zymessence
Vitalzym
I believe the Serrapeptase I take has has been far more beneficial to me. I originally took Vitalzym and then instead took Zymessence but in my opinion the Serrapeptase is better (and cheaper!)
DIM (instead I take Myomin). I have an under-active thyroid and DIM I believe can make my thyroid even more sluggish.
Natural Progesterone cream – there are mixed reviews regarding whether natural progesterone helps to reduce the size of fiborid. I have therefore chosen not to take this.
In terms of results:
In January 2012 I had my next scan to check on the size of my fibroid and it had increased in size. It had increased to 8.8cm x 8.3cm x 7.5cm. I was obviously disappointed to hear that news however I had read that the supplements I was taking go in your body where they are most needed first, i.e. this may mean not straight to my fibroid. However in July 2012 my fibroid was measured at 7.2cm x 7.1cm x 5.9cm. This is a decrease in size, in 6 months of 1.6cm x 1.6cm x 1.2cm. I therefore plan to continue with exactly what I am doing but still continuing with my research as I still worry that my next scan may show an increase in its size.
Hello Manchester Lady
Thanks so much for all the helpful and detailed information! Really appreciate it. Great to hear about the decrease and hope you'll show continued progress - please keep us posted!
Curious, why do you think the Serrapeptase is better than the Vitalzyme, other than price?
The reason why I think Serrapeptase is better than Vitalzym is due to the Serrapeptase content. In my opinion the higher the Serrapeptase content the better. One capsule of Serrapeptase contains 80,000 IU but Vitalzym I believe is only 2,500 IU.
I can tell the difference though myself. Serrapeptase breaks down protein, i.e. therefore also breaks down fibrin (what a fibroid is made of). The sign that protein is being broken down in your body is by your urine. If there are foamy bubbles in your urine this is a sign of protein is being broken down and passed out of your system, i.e. for me this is a good sign that the capsules I am taking our working.
I first took Vitalzym and occasionally noticed foamy urine, noticed it more with Zymessence but with Serrapeptase not only do I see foam in my urine but I actually see the fibrin fibres in the urine too and occasionally small bits of the fibroid too that are breaking away from my fibroid. I can tell that the Serrapeptase content at 80,000 IU per capsule is so much stronger than Vitalzym and the Serrapeptase you can see working by simply looking at your urine.
I should say I have also read about Nattokinase too in order to help break down fibroids. I have never taken this because I have also read it lowers your blood pressure which can lead to light headedness hence why in my opinion when comparing Serrapeptase, Dr Wong’s Zymessence, Vitalzym and Nattokinase I believe Serrapeptase to be the best product.
Hi ManchesterLady,
Wow, this is such helpful information, thank you so much for sharing so clearly and in such detail!
I want to add that I have been on a fibroid shrinkin program with that Dr. Akilah I told you about some time ago. It's been 3 months now since should put me on a specific program designed especially for me based on our hour long consultation.
I have another consultation in a few weeks since it has been 3 weeks. I think the program lst 6-9 months. I am currently taking evening primrose oil, chickweed, milk thistle, chaste berry and red rasberry. i think some of that will change when i have my consultation and based on our talk she will take away or add things. i will keep you posted on if I had any shrinkage at the end of the program.
Thanks for sharing Ginae! I have been quite curious about her. Looking forward to hearing how it works for you.
Hello Fibroid Shrinker! I was happy to stumble across your website and be able to find other women who have experienced fibroids and are interested in preventing/shrinking them too. I am a 30-yr-old woman who is currently recovering from having a myomectomy surgery (similar to a C-section) for the removal of a rather large fibroid, just 2 weeks ago. According to the lab reports, the fibroid measured 8cm x 7cm x 7cm. I have never had children before, so having to go through this process at such a young age terrified me and concerns me in my ability to have children. Furthermore, even though I've never had a baby before, my doctor said that I would now need to be closely monitored during future pregnancies and treated as a VBAC (to prevent uterine rupture). Although there wasn't much I could do to prevent the surgery from happening (since I wanted to have children), I cannot help but wonder if there were actions I could have taken to prevent this all from happening in the first place. My doctor really couldn't give me any helpful advice in how to prevent this from happening again.
My other concern is that of birth control pills, which I have heard may contribute to the growth of fibroids since they increase estrogen levels. I have been on birth control pills for many years and I cannot help but wonder if I weren't on birth control pills in the first place, maybe this wouldn't have happened. Of course all the doctors I've talked to tell me that birth control pills do not contribute to the growth of fibroids. Yet interestingly, there are other negative side effects I have experienced while on birth control pills that doctors will also repeatedly deny as the contributing agent. So needless to say, I have learned to take their expert advice on birth control pills with a grain of salt. Unfortunately, my surgeon recommended I stay on the birth control pills during the 3 months after surgery, since they advise not getting pregnant during this time-period. I plan to get off of them at the conclusion of the 3 months.
I was wondering if you have any advice for me? Also, I was wondering if you have found that the oil pulling has helped in shrinking and/or preventing fibroids? Any help or guidance is appreciated. Thank you!
Hello Faithful Marine Wife,
So sorry to hear about your having to have surgery, but good for you to be looking into how to prevent the fibroid regrowth.
I've heard lots of anecdotal evidence that birth control pills make your fibroids grow, and messing up your hormones with them certainly isn't a good idea on general principles. And most doctors don't seem to have a clue about fibroids so taking their word with a grain of salt is indeed recommended. I know you are taking them now to prevent pregnancy, but if that's the only reason isn't there some other birth control method you can use?
I'm making slow but sure progress and the oil pulling is among many other things that I do, so hard to say which thing is making the biggest difference. Please take a look at other posts in this blog about supplements, diet, etc. so you can reset your system and change whatever dynamic was causing the fibroids. A good place to start is this post: http://shrinkingfibroids.blogspot.com/2011/06/top-ten-must-do-natural-remedies-for.html
Wishing you the best and please keep us posted how things go for you.
